I don't think I really gave Madrid a fair shot the first time I was here; granted, it was only for a day, but I remember leaving with the impression that it was a large, sprawling city without any heart or center. This time around, by myself and with nothing better to do, I find myself walking around and really noticing the architecture, being quietly amazed at whatever Doña So-and-so did in her 16th century palace which is now a pastry shop and office building. I've also found myself wandering through its museums, perusing the upcoming season at its theaters, and falling directly onto my tail bone while running down some ancient (and very wet) wooden steps in a formal French garden near its royal palace with the thousand-year-old Temple of Debod and 12 Spanish onlookers as a backdrop. Culture is alive and well in the city, and it's clear that an appreciation for the arts, nature, and good food unites los madrileños. (And don't worry - about 600mg of Motrin is taking the edge off of my fall, just not completely, which is why I am now lying stomach-down on my bed writing this while trying not to move too much.) I do wish, though, that I were here with some people! It's a bit lonely going out at night to the plazas to sit around and drink sangria and pick around unidentifiable seafood by myself, but hey, maybe I'll work on being more outgoing... right...
On a side note, tomorrow I may head over to Segovia [here]. And in case you were trying to leave a comment (Dad and Elaine) and it asks you to "sign in," just select "anonymous." Not that I'm begging for anyone to leave comments, or anything...

Hola Tomas, I am glad you enjoy Madrid, I never did...I did like Segovia, however, and if I remember correctly there is a McDonalds right in the main square of the old city if you're interested!! lol Have a great time, some tortilla de patata and sangria for me. Katie B
After the luggage diabolical, the two long flights and finally finding your place of rest (hotel), with broken luggage in tow, what do you do, but fall on the steps! I told you that I should have come along....Stay safe, have fun and, uh, maybe get an exray.:) Dad
